The course aims to:

  1. Develop a fundamental understanding of the structure, properties and functions of biomolecules.
  2. Explain the organization and functioning of cells, organelles, membranes and chromosomes.
  3. Understand the molecular mechanisms of DNA replication, transcription, translation and gene regulation.
  4. Explain mechanisms of cell signaling, cellular communication, immunity and host–pathogen interactions.
  5. Develop an understanding of developmental processes in plants and animals.
  6. Explain major physiological processes in plants and animals.
  7. Understand principles of inheritance, mutation, genetic mapping and human genetics.
  8. Explain the principles of evolution, biodiversity, ecology and conservation.
  9. Introduce students to bioinformatics, computational biology, molecular modelling and drug design.
  10. Familiarize students with biotechnology, bioprocess engineering and recombinant DNA technologies.
  11. Develop competency in interpreting major biological experimental and analytical techniques.
  12. Promote awareness of statistics, IPR, biosafety, bioethics and research ethics.
